Wooden Signs timber types
We stock Swamp Kauri and Macrocarpa timber and will use Pine only on request, we can also source many others like Rimu, French Oak, Jarrah, Matai, Kwila, Teak and Walnut.
Swamp Kauri
- Kauri is considered a first rate timber with its long grain makes it an ideal wood to make carved wooden signs out of, we finish our Kauri wooden signs with a coat of clear oil, and recomend a yearly application to keep your custom sign looking new.
- The whiter sapwood is generally slightly lighter in weight. Its popularity with boatbuilders is due to its very long clear lengths, relative light weight and beautiful appearance when oiled or varnished. The timber has a beautiful sheen. It planes, carves and saws very well. It holds screws and nails very well. It darkens with age to a richer golden brown colour. It does not easily crack or split or warp.
- We have kauri stocks in slab and plank form , slabs can be scorced, we can even get NZ fresh milled kauri it is a lighter wood not as high in quality however we have suppliers with both plank and slabs in stock.
- If you like the look of Kauri or just want a bit more class in your sign this is a fantastic wood, send me a message and I will make you up a free layout and quote.
macrocarpa
- Macrocarpa is very similar to Kauri in character, and carves and turns very well owing to its fine texture.
- We stock verious sizes in plank form, and slabs are available in many sizes, to finish off a macrocarpa wooden sign it is oiled with clear wood oil, we recomend our custom wooden signs to be oiled once a year to keep them beautiful.
- Macrocarpa is one of the most naturally durable exotic softwoods grown in New Zealand, and is resistant to insect and borer.
- Its heartwood is rated moderately durable which means a 50x50 stake will last 10-15 years in the ground. Larger sections will last considerably longer. Outside and above the ground macrocarpa is equivalent to H3 pine in durability.
- Inside where the timber is not subject to the elements, it will last virtually indefinitely.
- I love macrocarpa the smell the look it is just a beautiful wood, if you would like a macrocarpa slab, or a macrocarpa custom wooden sign please contact us today for a free quote.
pine
- New Zealand Pine is an extremely versatile wood and and readily accepts stains, H4 treated pine has a green look after treatment so we prefer to stain pine wooden signs with an english oak stain.
- Pines are among the most widley farmed tree species, valued in NZ for their timber and wood pulp.
- H3 treated pine when carved will burr and have slightly rough edges, on a large sign this will not be noticable, on smaller signs I advise to use Macrocarpa or Kauri.
- In temperate and tropical regions, they are fast-growing softwoods that will grow in relatively dense stands, their acidic decaying needles inhibiting the sprouting of competing hardwoods.
- We stock pine in board form and can laminate to make very strong and large signs, rough edge slabs however are not available in pine.
- If you like the look of pine and it will fit the budget, send us a message and let us give you a free quote for your Pine wooden custom sign.
